This young man is one of five who will be charged with similar offences," said Senior-Detective Lewis when a young man named Hector Kenneth Claude Hodges, 22 years of age, appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court £o-day, charged with breaking and entering the shop of John Millar Roberts, at Kelburn, and stealing 7s in money and cigarettes and tobacco to the total value of £5 llg. "The accused," continued the Senior-Detective, "was arrested last night by Detective Thomas, and further inquiries are necessary in connection with other charges with which the accused was connected. He lives with his mother and is employed by the City Council." In regard to bail, Mr. Jackson asked that the accused's mother should be allowed to go security for him. "I can only say," replied the Senior-Detective, "the allegation is that six places were broken into by these young men, some of whom will appear to-morrow. The district covered includes places from Evan's Bay to Karori, although the property stolen was not particularly valuable." Bail was fixed at £100, but the question of the accused's mother's security was left to the discretion of the SeniorDetective. A remand until to-morrow week was granted, the officer intimating that the other accused, when they appeared, would also be remanded to that date.
In the case of a young man named James William Thomas Green, who appeared on the same charge, a similar remand was granted, with bail in a like JWil,
