POSTAL ADVICES
I The Chief Postmaster at Criristchurch advised yesterday afternoon as follows: —" Postmasters at Cheviot and Waiau report that, owing to flooded rivers, mail cars will be unable to get through. The postmaster \at Amberley reports that the township is flooded, and surrounding country under water. The post office is surrounded by water, but not entered. A large number of business aud private residences are flooded from 3 to 18 in. Railway washouts have occurred north and south of Amberley. The postmaster at Leithfield reports that the Kowai River has broken the banks and is rushing through the township and on the main road, which is impassable. The Superintendent ( of Telegraphs advises that telegraphic communication is totally interrupted north of Kaikoura and west of Darfield. The Railway Department advises that no trains are running beyond Rangiora. " The Postmaster of Rangiora reports that the White Rock mail service is suspended, as the Ashley River is impassable. The Oxford branch train service is being maintained, but it is doubtful if trains will get right through. Duvauchelle reports that the Eastern Bays mail contractor is held up owing to wash-outs. The postmaster at Rakaia reports similarly regarding the Highbank and Doric services^"
