RECORD RAIN AT CHRISTCHURCH
CAUSES FLOOD AND FIRE.

CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. There is a good deal of surface flooding in the city and'suburbs, but nothing serious. The rainfall for the twentyfour hours up to 9.30 a.m. was 3.396 inches—a record since the magnetic observatory was established twenty-one years ago. The previous record was 3.227 inches, established on 26t!i January of this year. ' A very high tide threatens to cause damage at New Brighton.
An unusual fire was caused in Linwood by the flood water reaching unslaked lime at a builder's house.
The Tees, from th» Chatham Islands, was due at Lyttelton last night, but up to 9 a.m. had not been sighted.
