FIENDS

A Correctional Court is the scene of the trial of seventy-eight persons concerned in the dope traffic. Thirty-one of the accused persons are women, nine doctors, six chemists, and • Fat Raol, known as the cocaine Icing oi Montmarire. It would need the pen of a' de Maupassant to describe the horrors o: the life stories revealed. Every degree of dope tyranny was represented. There were men and women who seemed unconscious of the degradation they had reached; others were intellectuals evidently engaged in. a ceaseless struggle agairjst temptation. Some of them were mere girls. This mass prosecution is the result of inquiries commencing in 1921, which showed that certain doctors and 1 chemists have been selling cocaine without making entries in the poison re- , gister, and deliberately overlooking evidence of fraud on the part of dopers.
