HARD-COURT CHAMPIONS
COMBINED EVENTS CONCLUDED.
The two remaining events in the Wellington hard-court tennis championships were played at the Brougham Hill Club's courts on Saturday afternoon.
One set remained to be decided in th« final match for the combined championship between Wilson and Miss Tracy and T. S. Williams and Miss Williams. The first had been won' previously by Wilson and Miss Tracy, 6-1. Although most of the games in the second set were- fought out from deuce, Wilson and Miss Tracj won the second set straight. Williams and Miss Williams made a good fight, but the winners were much too good for them; they were consistently sound in overhead work, which was generally decisive. Mies Williams played very steadily. . Wilson and Miss Tracy -were also the Tictors in the handicap combined. At one stage it looked as if Williams and Miss Williams, their opponents, who were on handicap 12, would win, but the winners made a great spurt in the closing strokes and made up lost ground. The Williams pair had a lead of 17 points half-way through the game. After 37 all had been called, Wilson and Miss Tracy ran up 13 points to, their opponents' 6, winning 50-43. Alter-1 ing their tactics on the experience gain- j ed in the championship set, Williams and Miss Williams played more up to the net, where Miss Williams performed some good placing work. As the play progressed, however, Wilson and his always-reliable partner closed up on them and their shots began to tell. Wilson's heavy smashes and Miss Tracy'a accurate volleying won them the required points with which to win the game.
