NATIONAL WAR FUNDS
BURSARTES GRANTED
At the meeting of the Executive Committee of the National War Funds Council, held on Thursday, the renewal of National War Funds bursaries to returned soldiers whoso University courses had. been interrupted by war. service was reviewed for the year 1923-24. Before the establishment of the Repatriation' Department, the National Council, recognising the disability students had suffered through their enlistment in thu New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, offered assistance to soldiers who desired to continue their University studies, and early in 1919 educational grants wert> made to 69 students for a period covering from four to five years, according to the time required to complete the course undertaken. On the establishment of the Repatriation Board, wh*e function it was to deal with this form of repatriation, the council agreed to bear the cost of the bursaries till the men selected had obtained their degrees. Up to 31st March, 1922, 43 students completed their courses, there being only two withdrawals from the University Colleges, both of which were due to physical disability.
During the past year 13 students obtained their diplomas—in agriculture (2), dentistry (2), civil engineering (1), and medicine (5), and there remain at Otago University ll medical students now in their final year. The reports of the Professorial Board being satisfactory, and the conditions governing the bursaries having been complied with, the National War Funds Council has "granted bursaries to the following students for the year ending 31st March, 1924:— F. 0. Bennett, J. H. Beaumont, Alex. Cumming, J. A. D. Iverach, K. H. Dean, S. L. Geerin, A. .H. Harvie, R. H. Marenday, L. H. Marshall, N. M. Matheson, and R. J. Maunsell, all 111 whom are in residence at the Otago Jlodical School, Dunedin. This allotment covers final payments authorised by ■ the National War Funds Council under its original scheme.
