MEMORIAL TO CAPTAIN SCOTT

THE SELECTED SITE,-

(rROJI OHE OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

LONDON, 23rd February. The Captain Scott Memorial Fund Committee has decided to place at Devonport, overlooking the Hamoaze, a piece of sculpture commemorative of the heroic deeds of the explorer and his companions.

At the meeting where the decision was come to, Sir W. Soulsby, K.C.V.O. (Hon. secretary) stated that H.M. Office of Works was quite unable to offer any site for the memorial on Crown property in London, as they had already given the site in Waterloo place oij which the Davy's memorial--to the late explorer, sculptured by his widow (now Mrs Hilton Young), was erected. The Royal Parks and the Royal Naval ■ College at Greenwich were out of the question. The London County Council was-also unable to offer a site. In St. Paul's Cath-, edral there was already a memorial' bronzo of Captain Scott. The Naval Commander-in-Chief at Plymouth had offered an excellent site at Mount Wise Devpnport, adjoining Admiralty House. Ine place was much frequented by townspeople and visitors in the summer, and was near the public walks and shops. As Captain Scott was a native of Devonport the site seemed to be a particularly appropriate one. The committee ■ decided to accept the offer, and the work of erection will be put in hand soon. The. memorial takes the form of a granite pylon, surmounted by a bronze group, representing "Courage, sustained by_ "Patriotism" spurning 'Fear, Despair, and Death," the firs, figure being crowned by "Immortality. At the foot of the group are the words "For King,V 'Tor Country," For Brotherly Love," and "Fov Knowledge. The front of tho pylon bears the names of the four heroes with their portraits in bronze medallions; ■ At the back of the monument is a-trophy consisting of a pair of snow shoes, a replica ?t-vf >? Cl° 1 3S erected °n "Observation Hill, and a wreath. At the foot are tho memorable words of Captain Scott • "Had we Hvad I should have had a tale to tell ot hardihood, endurance, and courage of my companions which would have; stirred the heart of every Englishman." . °

There are other 1 decorative features, and the monument, which i« square stands 37ft high. The sculptor was the late Mr. A. H. Hodge, whose designs were left at his death in such an, advnnettd mute v to place im tUflioulty in the way of their being carried out.
