YOUNG BOY KILLED

A distressing fatality occurred in Karori about 5.30 last evening, as a result of which a thirteen-year-old boy named Herbert Reginald Johnson lost his life. It appears that he was standing near a corner, when Mr. F. F. Bailey, in endeavouring to swerve out of the path of a tramcar, knocked him over. The unfortunate boy sustained a fractured skull and was dead when Dr. Pattie arrived. An inquest will be held. The corner where the accident occurred has always been regarded as a very dangerous one, and was recognised as such by the old Karori Borough Council,' and, later, by the Wellington City Council. The. Works Committee of the City Council has had plans prepared 1 with the object of widening the corner and lessening the danger, but the work could not proceed owing to lack of funds. It is understood that a piece of land was given to the city by the late Mr. Henry Dryden. An accident 'occurred at the corner about six months ago, and the life of a pedestrian was 6aved by th« car being driven into a telegraph pole.
