VICE-REGAL. His Excellency the Governor-General attended a meeting of the Executive Council this morning, and leaves for Invercargill this evening (states a Press Association telegram from Dunedin). He will be joined by Lady Jellicoe and party on Saturday, proceeding to Stewart Island, and returning to Dunedin on Monday. Lord Jellicoe will confer honours at an investiture of St. John Ambulance Brigade on 20th April, leaving for Christchurch on the 23rd.

Messrs. Charles Holdsworth, managing director of the Union Steam Ship Com'pany, and J. I. Goldsmith have bean elected members of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce. The Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister of Public Works, who is visiting the Auckland district, will take part in the ceremony connected with the completion of the Nihotopu dam on Saturday next. Mr. E. P. Neale, M.A., LL.B., 8.C0m., assistant to Professor Murphy, Professor of Economics at Victoria 'University College, has received advice by i cable that he has been awarded the degree of Doctor of Science for his thesis on the "Demography of New Zealand," ! a treatise on the vital statistics "of the Dominion. Dr. Neale was educated at the Otago Boys' High School, and is a graduate of both Otago University and Victoria College.

Captain John Taylor Marshall, late of the 2nd Dragoon Guards, with which regiment he served in India, died in Wellington this morning. He was a son of Captain James Marshall, of the Inniskilhng i Dragoons. Arriving in New Zealand in 1865, he joined the Armed Constabulary, and later commanded the Nelson Military District. Subsequently he saw service in the South African War. He leaves a widow, and one son and five daughters—Mr/H. T. Marshall, Mrs. W. E. Rawson, Mrs. H. E. Thomas, and Mrs. A. D. Briggs, of Wellington ; Mrs. S. J. Gill, Masterton; and Mrs. F. Wood, Perth.
