EASTBOURNE CARNIVAL FETE

SUCCESSFUL FOOTBALL SPORTS.

Yesterday was the first really fine day experienced since the Eastbourne carnival executive inaugurated its eight days' campaign to raise funds to provide a gymnasium and training-shed for the use of the East Harbour athletes.The beautiful summer's day drew large crowds to Eastbourne, and the Becreation Ground was well patronised during both afternoon and evening. The sideshows did excellent business, and the queen stalls all appeared to be doing a thriving trade. The finer weather drew many patrons to the seaplane, and during the afternoon a number of flights were made from the beach, a large crowd of people watching the operations from the belt of trees above the beach. The afternoon tea and supper marquee was crowded during the day The arrangements were in the hands of Mrs. | Jowett, who is ably supported by Mesdames Hartridge, Turner, Woolley, Battersby, Griffiths, Duff, Carr, Macßain, Giles, Misses Young, Wighton, Nixon, and Woolley. The tent is under the auspices of the general carnival executive, and is available from 10 a.m. till 10.30 p.m. The amusements during the evening were, confined exclusively to cabaret dancing and the various side-shows on different parts of the ground. In the afternoon sports were conducted by the Eastbourne Rngby Football Club officials. Those responsible for the conduct of the sports were Messrs. J. C. Turner (chairman of the club), S. Winny, A. Walling, W. J. Heenan, and J. Ridler. They received ready assistance from a number of club members. The sports, favoured by the fine weather, were the Most successful held so far during the carnival. Laws 1, R. Hunt 2; 8-10,, Peter Turner 1, H.,, Durant 2under- 8, C.; Flaws 1, A: M'Lean 2; open handicap (under 14), X,' Palmer 1,. H. Evans 2; 100 yds open handicap (six entries), M'Carthy (syds) L, Wilby (6yds) 2; place-kicking (13 entries), I. Oakley 1, D. Hatchings 2; drop-kicking (8 entries), R. Chittey 1, N. Foley 2. \ Wrestling proved very popular, and \ some excellent bouts were witnessed. In the first heat, under 12, F. Platt beat A. Henderson, and in the second H. Evans beat P. Campbell. Platt defeated Evans m the final after a willing bout. . Two bouts took place in the 12-14' class, J. Ferguson beating L. Johns and F. Palmer beating ~E. M'Lean. The final went to Palmer after a > close wrestle .with Ferguson. In the over 14 class, J. Elvin made short work of I. Oakle> . ■■■■■■'■. ' Married Ladies' Race.—Mrs. Higginbotham 1, Mrs. Winny and Mrs. Henderson, dead. heat, 2. Wrestling was by no meant the most popular sport of the afternoon, the several tugs-of-war drawing a large crowd. Four teams were,entered, as follow:— A team: K. Contrie, E. Gumbley, K. Palmer, W. Flaws, F. Henderson, H. Hill, C. Flaws, P. Campbell, R; Heenan; B team: L. Johns, B. Logan, F. Jones, J. Fergnson, W. Dring, A.' Meo, G. Onne, H. Evans, S. Meo; C team:; D. Meo, J. Walling, J. Danka, M. Krebs, M. Gopp, J.. Payne, F. Platt, R. Hoare, E. Higginbotham; D team : E. M'Lean, J. Belcher, A. Green.. E., Lamoht, R. Laws, A. Walling, G. Laws, J. Evans, A. Mayes. In the preliminaries the B team defeated the A team in two pnlls, and the. Cs beat the D's. Three: pulls were ■ necessary before- tha final was decided, the winners even- ■ tually proving to .be the B team. During the evening a crowd of Poneke Football Club members arrived on tha scene to support the local football queen, and made a merry evening of'it. TO-DAY'S ATTRACTIONS. Picnic sports are again being held today, and there is an excellent attendance of the general public, especially of, young people. Special excursion rates were adopted this, morning by tbe 10.15 boat, the vessel when it left the city being crowded. Excursion rates are available on the 7.15 o'clock boat tonight. Those travelling at excursion rates may return from Rona Bay by any later steamer. Cabaret dancing will be continued, and other amusements will also be available. TO-MORROW'S PROGRAMME. Amateur trial sports, the juvenile section, will be held to-morrow under tha management of the East Harbour Athletic Club. The borough has been, divided into six blocks, and each block will be tried out with the object of making a selection of those;who shall take part in the large sports gathering to be held on Saturday under the aegis of the N.Z.A.A.A. • To-morrow's'programme is under the control of a special commit- : tee, of which Mr. J. W. Heenan is I chairman. EXCURSION FARES. Excursion fares are available thia evening on the 7.15 p.m. boat, and tomorrow by the 10.15 a.m. and 7.1S p.m. boate. On Saturday excursion fare* will be available on all the ferry boats.;
