WAR FUNDS DISPOSAL

to ihi idhok.

Sir,—ls the question of proviajon for returned soldisrs receiving the attention it deserves throughout New Zealand? It is at' least satisfactory to know that so much has already been accomplished, bu* surely only a tithe of oar duty ha* been done. Apparently there is already amongst us a feeling of indifference and carelessness in adequately providing for these men so. as to pat them in a position to ultimately provide lor thenwervei. The distribution of the funds subscribed and now in tie control of die National War Funds Council is open to criticism. Surely these funds wens never intended to form a .reserve for survivors from som« possible' future war in perhaps a hundred years? It is clearly oar boanden duty to see that these farads are so disbursed now as to make soch provision really' effective m the present, not the remote future The National War Funds Council is no doubt taking every care that the funds are distributed on economical lines, but 'subscribers who take a keen interest in the subject wooH be more satisfied if the distribution were not strictly confined to the interest earned, which, I am informed, is now the case. The existing conditions of some of the men remind one of those obtaining- in Australia after the Boer Wac, and it behoves all those interested to see thai such conditions are | remedied without delay. Thai remedy seems to cowist in giving the men an, opportunity of earning a decent living in suitable places in tbe country" and, if necessary, under nroper supervision. Any scheme which -will h»TO this off=ct is surely worthy of the caroful- consideration of those controlling., tho funds, and any undue strictness in their distribution is sumly unnecessary.—l am, etc.. . -■■ H. LANGLEY. Ist Febnmry.
