VICTORY FOR NEW BRIGHTON
DECISIONS OF SWIMMING CON FERENCE.

, The Nelson Shield competition took place to-day in Caroline Bay, when four teams entered. A fine contest resulted in a win for New Brighton with 153 points. Canterbury, 149 points, was second, Wellington, 147 joints, third, and North Beach, 126 points, fourth. The annual swimming conference sat hero to-day. It was decided that the intermediate class be abolished and junior age raised to sixteen; also that a iunior diving championship be adde,d. A remit from Wanganui, that a professional coach be engaged, caused much discussion, but it was withdrawn in fay : our of a motion that the Minister of F.ducntion be asked to produce a handbook on swimming for use- by teachers in schools. A remit from Canterbury-, that tho championships be confined to the four centres, was rejected, ■ and _ it was decided that the next championships be at Wanganui. The question of sending a team to i< the Olympic Games at Paris was discussed, but no decisive steps will be taken till the council hears from the centres as to the likelihood of raising, sufficient funds. The conference will be continued to-morrow.
