A TOLL-GATE

FOR DAY'S BAY ROAD

APPROVED BY MINISTER.

After considering the argument* laid before him by a deputation regarding the provision of money for the reconstruction and upkeep of the Day's Bay road, the Minister of Public Works has approved the principal of establishing a toll-gate. The Petone Borough Council last night received from Mr. Coates a copy of hie letter to the Hutt County Council.

The Minister said in the course of the letter: ". . . In view of the na-

ture and origin of a very considerable percentage of the traffic upon this road, and the fact that it is not through traffic, I have come to the conclusion that it is one of the few cases which exist in my knowledge where the establishment of a toll-gate appears to be the preferable course. The Hutt County representatives at the deputation appeared to be <vf the opinion that in view of the strong objection of other local bodies to contribute, the establishment of a toll-eate would be a satisfactory solution so far as the Hutt County wae concerned, and shall be glad to be officially) assured that this is so."

The Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) remarked that if the Hutt County Council decided to adopt the suggestion of the Minister, then all anxiety as to the council being called upon to contribute towards, the construction and maintenance of the roads to the bays would end.

No action was taken by the council, as it was considered the matter was one entirely between the Hutt County Council and the Minister.
