N.Z. INSTITUTE

ANNUAL MEETING.

The annual meeting of the New Zealand Institute was held in Wellington to-day. Professor Kirk presided, and there were also' present' Meters) B. C. Aston (Government), 'M. A; Elliott (Manawatu),' Professor F. P. Worlfey (Auckland), Dr. Tilyard (Nelson), Pro- 1 fessor Segar (Auckland), Dr. F. W. Hilgendorf (Canterbury) Dr. CMlton (Government), Mr. A. M. Wright (Canterbury), Professor Marsden, Dr. C. A. Cotton (Wellington). Professor Marshall (Waaganui), the Hon. G. M. Thomson (Otago), Archdeacon Williams. (Poverty Bay), and Dr. Cockayne (Government). The annual report dealt at length with the revised conditions' attached to the Hamilton Prize, in memory of the late Mr. A. Hamilton, for encouraging original pure , scientific, research. Reports were included which concerned the national parks, the removal of the library into the Turnbull Library building, fireblight, and oth^r subjects. , In discussion on the report, it was decided that £4 be awarded this year as the Hamilton Prize.

The president said that although the PanPacific conference could not be held here this year, they must keep their minds 05. the following conferences. It would probably be six years before there was a chance of the conference being able to accept an invitation to New Zealand. The financial position shows that the funds of the institute are in a much better position than they were last year. This is mainly due to the fact that £1750 has been received from the Government (£750 balance fee for 1921, and £1000 due for 1922) as against only £250 received during the previous year. Voluntary contributions to the publication fund also helped to swell the revenue by £188 4s sd, but on the other hand, the sale of publications was £46 lees, and the incorporated societies' levy £64 less thari the previous year. The increased revenue enabled the institute to, pay the Government Printer a considerable portion of the amount due to him. On 31st December, 1921, the amount owing was £1740 11s- 8a; this has now been reduced to £304 10s, £1450 having been paid off during the year.
