SERVICES TO EDUCATION
CHANCELLOR OF UNIVERSITY.

Appreciative reference to the appointment of Dr. J. Macmilhm Brown as Chancellor of the University of New Zealand and to the services rendered to education by the retiring Chancellor (Sir Kobert Stont) were made at to-day's meeting of the Canterbury Coilego Board ' of Governors.
In moving a motion congratulating Psofessor Brown on his appointment, the chairman (Mr. H. D. Acland) said that the professor was one of the first lecturers appointed when Canterbury College was established. The college was most fortunate in the appointment of Professor Macmillan Brown. He was one of the most eminent men in education circles, not only in New Zealand, but in Australia.
Dr. Chilton seconded the motion, ■which was carried.
The chairman,. speaking of the retirement of Sir Robert Stout -from the Chancellorship, of' the New Zealand University, said that Sir Robert Stout had held a unique position in, education circles for nearly half a century. Some.forty years ago he was Prime Minister, and fifty years ago he was Attorney-General in the provincial district of Otago, so he had been before the public for over forty years. He, had 'been Chancellor of the University "for twenty years. Mr. Acland moved: "That the Board of Governors of Canterbury College desires to place on record its appreciation of the eminent services rendered to education and to the University of New Zealand by Sir Robert Stout, ex-Chancellor.." In seconding the motion, Mr. L. Wood said that Sir Robert Stout wa3 looked upon as the grand old man of education in New Zealand. The motion was carried.
