ROAD OBSTRUCTION

BY OVERLADEN LORRIES

RAILWAY CROSSING QUESTION. •

A decision, was reached by tjie Wellington Automobile Club yesterday at the monthly meeting, to approach.the Automobile Union asking it to go into the matter of over-laden motor lorries, which are considered a danger on the roads: The union is to be asked to approach local bodies with a view to securing a general regulation throughout the Dominion that no motor vehicle more than 8' feet in width laden shall be allowed on roads with a traffic surface of 25 feet Or under. It was pointed out that there \vae an increasing! danger from over-laden and large-sized lorries on such roads as that over the Paekakariki hill.

Members expressed the opinion that it was tiin-e something was done with "regard to improvements on the surface of the Hutt road. .The matter was brought* up by Dr. G.W.'Harty., who recommended: "(1) The advisability of bringing pressure to bear on the responsible authorities regarding the state of the Hutt road. (2) I Supporting the abolition of the speed limit, and substituting 'driving so as to endanger public safety.' (3) A. protest against the increasing neglect of the rule of th« road, especially ,by drivers of horse-drawn vehicles and motor lorries. (4) Improvements? at the Petone railway crossing." •

The suggestions were adopfjed, and it was decided to ask the Railway Department to station a man at the Petone crossing pending the installation of the ; wig-wag signals. The Department is also to be asked to station a man at tho Porirua station crossing. Mr. E. F. Haydoq wrote complaining of the closing o( the road from Evans Bay around Point Halswell. It was stated that this-road was closed because of a difference between the City Council and the r Defence Department as to who should maintain it. In the meantime the road was being damaged by the- aea, and if nothing was done would ' eventually require a large expenditure. It was decided to approach "the City Council, and point out that there was continual complaint among motorists at the closing of this fine marine drive adjacent to the city, and to urge that * something should be done without delay to preserve it and make it available to the public.
