THE NAPIER SEAT

MR. MASON'S POSITION,

(IT miroiAPH.—SPECIAI/ TO IHB POST.)

RAPIER, This Day. With reference to a statement in a Wellington paper to the' effect that when Mr. Massey spoke here on Tuesday he told the audience that Mr. Vigor Brown had been a very good member and he hoped to see him Teturned, Mr. Mason, who is also a Eeform candidate, declared in an address on Saturday that this statement is contrary to fact. Mr. Mason admits that Mr. Massey said that Mr. Brown had been a good member, but declares that he did not express any hope to see Mr. Brown reelected, nor did he ask the electors to support Mr. i Brown's candidature. Mr. Mason claimed that he was in the field as a straight-out Reform candidate three months before Mr. Brown made up his mind to leave the Opposition benches and join the Reform Party. No doubt had Sir Joseph Ward announced his candidature for one of the seats at the forthcoming election, Mr. Brown would have remained with the Opposition Party. 'Mr. Mason said he was assured of the support of the Beform Party here, and his supporters believed he could win the seat against all comers.
