(AOSTBiUAN • NBW ZIAIAND CiSLI ASSOCIATION.)
(Received 6th October, 1 p.m.)
CAPETOWN, sth October. Stassen, a miner, was executed today. [Stasaen took part in the Band troubles some months ago, and during that period is reported to have shot two natives. It was for this offence that he was convicted and has paid the penalty. The case aroused a great deal of interest in South Africa, and protests and appeals for a reprieve were showered upon the Government. Labour unions in various parts of the world termed the death sentence "judicial murder." The "Cape Times, ' however, maintained that the facts in the ca.*a revealed a wanton disregard for native life. In so grave a matter, it says, no Government can allow .tself to be swayed by sentiment. The Governments' decision ought to be accepted, as it was reached dispassionately and it! accordance with law and the highest inleit-sts of the country.]
