LASCAR CREWS
"SAVING THEIR OWN SKINS" evidence about the egypt Alleged lack of boat1 drill. (UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION^-COPTIUSHT.) (AUSTRALIAN • NEW ZEALAND' CABLE ASSOCIATION.)' (Received July 29, 1 p.m.) LONDON, 28th July. Giving evidence at the inquiry into the . loss of the Egypt, Gates, boatswain, said that his boal •crew, previous to the trip, did not have one complete boat drill. The men were merely drawn up abreast of the boat, and dismissed. Collingwood, .deck steward, said "that the lascars crowded the port side boats, and rendered them immovable. . Their one idea was to save their own skins, and they had to be booted out by the officers. The only way to control 'the natives was to < stand over them with a revolver.
One native gave evidence that- he was not told the number of his boat in case of emergency, and was not given a lifejacket. He was ignorant of the handling and lowering of the boats.
An Indian fireman stated that therewas no boat-drill instruction and no lifejackets for the lascars. Another stated that there were no lifebelts in the lascar quarters. He was shot and wounded while entering a boat. Another gave evidence that he was ordered out of a boat by the captain, and later, as he was entering the boat again, he was shot and wounded by a passenger. ?
