VALUABLE BOOKS

GERMAN CHEMICAL WORKS

PURCHASED FOR £187 10s FOR

UNIVERSITY.

Some years ago under the will of the late Mr. Athol Hudson the sum of £200 was bequeathed to the Victoria University College Council for the purpose of purchasing books and apparatus for scientific research. The council placed the money in a trust account in the Post Office Savings Bank, the trustees being Mr. Clement Watson and Professor Easterfield, now of the Cawthron Institute, Nelson. Up to the present none of the money has been expended and the amount in the Savings Bank 'is £292 12s 9d.

The council at its meeting last night discussed briefly a report to the effect that Pz-ofessor Robertson, with the consent of the trustees, had purchased in England a German chemical encyclopaedia called "Die Berectite der Deutcheu Chemischen Gesellschaft Jahrg" at a cost of £187 10s. The payment of this sum was asked by the Registrar (Mr. G. E. S. Robison), who stated that the book was regarded as very important and a valuable addition to the library It was almost essential to any scientific library and, so far as he knew, there was only one other copy in New Zealand—in Auckland, he believed. It was in the original German, and he did not think any translation existed. The books (vols. 1 to 54) had now arrived, but a special permit was needed to land them, as, though they were secondhand, they were of German origin. The council adopted the report, and agreed to a proposal that a third trustee should'be appointed.
