RED CROSS SOCIETY

I Mr. T. Munt presided at the monthly I I meeting of the Wellington Red Cross Society held yesterday afternoon. I ' Further consideration was given to the matter of fhe motor ambulance which had been allocated to the Wellington Red Cross, and handed on to Wanganui, as being of far more service there than it was in Wellington. The society here had spent some money on this ambulance, and the Wanganni branch had expended a good deal more in getting it into useful condition. The Wellington Society had been asked to make a gift of the ambulance to Wanganui, and was anxious to do so, but the War Funds Department had written to say that the ambulance could not be given away, but must be sold, and the proceeds forwarded to the Department. The Wanganui branch wrote that funds had been raised there to defray the expenses of alterations and repairs, and the position had been rendered difficult. It was decided to refer this letter to the War Funds Department.

. Mr. Burnett stated that news had been received of the coming visit to New Zealand of Mrs. Wilson, wife of the late Dr. Wilson, of Antarctic fame, who had been closely associated -with Red Cross work with the New Zealand War Contingent work in England. It was decided that - arrangements should be made to welcome Mrs. Wilson when she arrives here.

A sub-committee comprising Lady Luke, Mrs. W. Nathan, and Mrs. Moorhouse was set up to go through the applications (for the Wellington Centre) for the Red Cross Scholarship; their recommendations to be submitted to .the executive meeting to be held next Wednesday. In discussing the matter of a permanent home for chronic ex-service- men it was decided to write to General Sir Donald M'Gavin and ask what steps were being taken .in the matter. In the course of the meeting the Chairman stated that he had visited a number of the sanatoria, and mentioned that at Tauherenikau specially. He found there that all creature comforts were well provided, but amusements, such as a billiard table, etc., were'lacking. Mr. Munt stated that he would visit Pukeora at s a Inter date.
