CITY BY-ELECTION

MR. PARTON CONGRATULATED.

•Mr. A. W. Parton, the candidate selected by the Civic League to contest the City Council by-election, was congratulated by the delegates to:. the Eastern Suburbs League last night, and it was taken as a compliment to the Eastern Suburbs League. . The various speakers stated that Mr. Parton had been a very able worker, and it was hoped that he would poll well on tlie 18th.

The following motion was unanimously carried :-—"That this Eastern . Suburbs League joins with the Civic League in protesting.against outside political interference in the forthcoming by-election, and relies on the electors generally to show their resentment at the poll on tbe 18th July."

A public meeting in support of Mr. J. Glover's candidature will be held in the Karori Town Hall to-night, at 8 o'clock. .The Khandallah meeting advertised for to-morrow night has been cancelled. Several meetings have been held under Labour Party auspices in various parts of the city in support of Mr. Glover's candidature, and motions of confidence have been.' carried without dissent. At the meeting in St. Anne's Hall, Northland, last night Councillors P. Fraser, M.P., and G. H; Chapman, Mr. J. Glover, and Mr. E. J. Howard, M.P., delivered addresses on various aspects of the Labour Party's municipal policy. After several questions had been answered, a motion of confidence in the Labour Party's candidate was moved by Captain M'lndoe and carried unanimously.
