THE CIVIC LEAGUE PROTEST

TO TBI EDITOR. J Sir, —It is not our intention to reply in detail to the empty and somewhat imprudent letter of your correspondent, James Thorn, first, because we do not recognise Mr. Thorn or his party as "Labour," and secondly, to deal with his veiled personalities would be to place ourselves on his level. His picture of the league as a body rolling in wealth and enjoying special privileges shows he is entirely ignorant of what he is writing about. Our grounds of protest against the intrusion of certain permanent residents of Auckland, Christchurch, and Dunedin into the Wellington Municipal Election are these:— (1) That the Wellington electors are quite capable of managing their own affairs. (2) That to mix up Parliamentary and municipal politics is against, the best interests of our city. (8) That tho body named "The New Zealand Labour Party" declares in its platform for "the principle of self determination." (4) That for a party to profess its support of the principle of self-determina-tion and at the some time deny the full right to Welling ton citizens of dealing witli their own purely local affairs, is an attitude of political dishonesty.—We are, etc., EXECUTIVE, WELLINGTON CIVIC LEAGUE. 12th July.
