GOOD FIELDS FOR ALL EVENTS P__R____MBN___BY HANDICAP TO TAME FOX„ (]_f_m Onr -Special Reporter.) TRENTHAM, This Day. _3ie second day of the Wellington Racing Club's Winter Meeting was ojMsnod in fine bat dull weather, and in thai presence of a large crowd. The recent rains had softened the course and .grounds, but the clnb had catered for the convenience of ite patrons by a liberal distribution of straw on the hrnim. The fields were large and the prospects were for a good day's sport. ■The Lower Hutt Municipal Band is again in attendance. Results of the racing up to the time of going to presa are as follow : — OOEUNNA HURDLE HANDICAP, of 350 soys, second horse 70 eovs; "and, third horse 35 soys from the stake; one mile and. ar-half. Two. withdrawals, Volo and Banogue, from the opening event left a field of seventeen, Royal Exchange being sent out a good favourite, with Rowan, Hushman, and Kareao also well fancied. The field was despatched in good order, and all negotiated the first hurdle without mishap. Totara Jack led the way past the stand for the first time, closely followed by Sir Wai and Billy Gluten, with Passenger bringing up the rear. Walton fell at the second obstacle. To-' tara Jack was still in front going round to the back, where he pulled up, and took no further part in the race. Royal Exchange had moved up nicely, and, jumping well, took the. leading position . round to the straight. Meanwhile, some of the field had moved up with the leader;; among them being Rowan. Entering the straight, Royal Exchange and Rowan were prominent, and the race looked a good thing for the favourite, who led over the last.!'jump. On the flat, however, an outsider in Nautical put in a fine finish, and beat the favourite by a neck. Sir Wai, who had jumped . forward in the straight, filled third place, a good length behind Royal Exchange. .Rowan was fourth, and Good Start next. ' Time, 2min 57sec. -

Being sent away together, the field was well bunched passing the stand, Tatton Park leading. Hyginas fell at the first obstacle, 'Roach, the rider, sustaining a broken collar-bone., Tatton Park kept in front until half-way along the back, where he fell, Brown Linnet and Red Cent taking up the running, with Seadown handy. Passing the stand for the second time, however, John Bunny was showing the way to Romance, and Brown Linnet jvas handy. The last named then made a break on the field, and was well clear along the back and towards the straight. The obstacle at the bend, however, proved his ■ undoing, and he fell, apparently being injured. The rider, A. M'Millan, had a wrist broken. Romance and' Seadown were left to fight out - the finish, the former prevailing somewhat easily, winning by two lengths, from the favourite. Five lengths away was.
