BOISTEROUS WEATHER

GALE IN WELLINGTON.

The intensity of the westerly storm area has been felt in Wellington, particularly during . last night, boisterous winds being the rule. The Dominion Meteorologist states that locally there were two periods when the wind force was at its greatest—between 6 p.m. "'and 10 p.m. yesterday, and between 2 a.m. and 4,30 a.m* to-day. The highest gust at the Thorndon Observatory was at the rate of 62 miles per hour, which is equivalent to 11£ pounds pressure per square foot. That was recorded at 2.20 o'clock ■ this morning. The squally conditions did damage in various parts of the town, ■particularly to roofs and chimneys. The wind decreased towards 9 o'clock this morning, a fresh north-westerly being since experienced. The locals rainfall was half-an-incb, but there were heavier falls in other places—Bo points at Westport, 2.05 inches at Greymouth, and 9.85 inches at Arthur's Pass. There was also heavy rain in parts of the Otago district.

The indications are stiff for boisterous weather. Fairly heavy rain may be expected generally, with rivers flooded on the West Coast and southernmost districts, and colder weather following. Snow is likely on some of the higher levels. The barometer is due to rise soon in the South, but there may be another fall before the enfl of the week. The Hutt River commenced to rise at 7 a.m. to-day, and at noon was about 6 feet above normal. No damage has so far been reported. The work recently done at the wash-out south, of the Silverstream bridge had not this morning been affected.

A traveller from Masterton this ■morning stated to a Post reporter that all the rivers and water-courses, in the Wairarapa were in a high state of flood, and much of the low-lying country in the neighbourhood of Dalefield and Matarawa was; inundated. , A-violent gale passed over .the district on Monday night.
