CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP OF NEW ZEALAND

When play ceased in the recent OUgo v. Wellington match, a dozen games were marked as incomplete. ■ Seven of these have since been disposed of by negotiation. At the request of tho Otago Chess Club, th« positiona reached in the remaining five games are being submitted to the Auckland Board' (Messrs. Grierson, Moir, and P. N. Stewart) for adjudication. A very close finish is expected. The telegraphic tourney to decide the club championship of 'Now Zealand is to be continued at 6 p.m. on Saturday next, ] the fixtures being Auckland v. Wellington ! and Ocago v. Canterbury. Nelson has the bye. In last year's contests, Auckland defeated Wellington by ono game (10^ to 9i), after an exciting finish. The unfinishod games in tho Otago v. Nelson match have been adjudicated upon, the final figures being Otago, 9 wins. Nelson, 6. At the first twelve boards, which count for tho New Zealand olub tourney, Otago"s margin was two points (7-5). THE WELLINGTON CHESS LEAGUE. The fixture, Ngaio v. Wellington B, wan played at Ngaio on Tuesday last, and proved very enjoyable. The junior contest ended in a tie (3-3), and it looks as if the senior match will end the same way, as the position at Board 2 (tho only unfinished game) is markedly in favour of the Wellington player (E. Mackay, the club's popular president, is leading in tho annual championship contest (10 entries). His unfinished game against Mr. R. J. Barnes, the club champion, is in a very even state. The fixture, Gyles, jun., v. W. E. Mason was also adjourned at an interesting stage on Saturday evening, when the club room had a very animated appearance, no less than 34 players being in attendance. Mr. Gyles, sen., 13 loading in the '.'intermediate" tourney (8 entries), closely followed hy Messrs. S. Faulknor, W. White, and A. L. Lawson. In the junior championship contest there are 14 competitors, Mr. A. E. Jessup is leading, Messrs. F. Grady, W. J.- Fairburn, W. Pottingor, and Cumberworth being in hot pursuit. Mr. H. Anderson is leading in the "Petherick" tourney (handicap), m which there are 17 competitors. Ladder matches have been won by Mrs. Gyles, and Messrs. H. G. Lee, D. Purchase, W. White, and A. L. Lawson. THE NGAIO CLUB. The best tallies to date in the Npaio Club's sealed handicap tourney are as follow: —J. Lindsay (6 wins, no losses), V. J. Brooker (7-1), W. J. Hicks (4^-1^), E. E. Hicks (5-2), A. H. Gibson (3-1), and A. B. Topp (5-2). Bach competitor has to play eleven games.
