BOILER INSPECTION
ISSUE OF CERTIFICATES
NEED FOR PROMPT PAYMENT,
It is the aim of the Marine Department to shorten the period that elapses between inspection of boilers and machinery conducted under the Inspection of Machinery Act, 1908, and amendments, and the subsequent issue of certificates and payment of fees. , The cooperation of owners of boilers and machinery is sought to enable the Department to fully accomplish its aim. "To encourage such co-operation," said the Minister (the.Hon. J. G. Anderson) to-day, "the reduced fee, provided is paid and the certificate in respect thereof is taken up within one month after the date of notice that the certificate is ready for issue. The penalty clauses of the Act provide:—(a) A fine not exceeding £100 where an owner works or uses a boiler or machinery in respect of which a certificate has not been issued, or for which a ciertificato is not in force, (b) A fine not exceeding £20 where an owner fails to keep a certificate available at all reasonable times for inspection by all persons working at or with the boiler or, machinery, and also by the inspector and all members of the Police Force. :
"Whilst the Department has no wish to invoke the aid of these penalty clauses, and will not attempt to do so under reasonable circumstances, ,ifc, seems desirable to point' out for the general information of interested parties that, as promptness in settlement is now specially subsidised by the Department by way of reduced fees, it is only just to expect owners to obviate any avoidable delays in settlement.. The Secretary of the Department, on receipt of an application, will supply full information on the subject to any owner to whom, the requirements, of the Act may not bo quite clear."
