ART EXHIBITION
Not for many years has a more in= teresting collection of oil and watercolour paintings by artists of distinction been on view in Wellington than is now open, to free inspection by the art-loving public, at the M'Gregor Wright Gallery, Lambton-quay. The pictures have been collected by a local connoisseur. They include works by painters of European -pute as w-,.11 as those of New Zealand artists. _ Mr. Julius OHsson contributes a striking marine study, "Choppy Weather off the ' Cornish Coast." A Dutch pastoral, "Milking Time, Holland," by Mr. A. J, C. Bryce, R.B.A.j is prominent in the oil section, as also ire two excellent examples of Mr. Charles P. Gbldie's art. Works by this Auckland! artist aro rarely offered for sale.Sir. Andrew C: Gow's head of; \a, eipsy girl is a. cabinet picture, carefully and bcauiifully painted; Sir Arthur Hacker's fine figure study in water colours of a gir! ,will aiso. have many admirers. Mr.Frederick Gbodall, who died a year or twd ago;, is represented by' one of. those Eastern scenes iii which lie specialised; English water colours arc prominent in the! collection. Mr.- Hely Smith; R.B.A:; contributes a largo and richlycolourqd study,.Of shipping called "Tropical Traders;" , Smaller pictures by the same artist include a painting of a picturesque THames. side scene. Mr, G: C. Haiti.? ''Market Scene, Dordrecht,'* is painted in fine spirit, and there is a small but charming water-colour by Mr ; A. Ludovici; R.B;A., entitled ''On the Sands, St: Ives," a veritable gem; Mr : Luker, R.8.A., is represented by a restful rural scene; quite in the old traditions of the English school; Mr; Lee Hankeyj R.Lj R. 0:1., by a delicate landscape and a delightful study of a little girl's head; Mr; Fred Roe, R. 1., by a strongly-drawn figure study of soldiers saying good-bye to a comrade off to ."Blighty:" Tlie famous animal painter, the late Mr. Charles Swan, has two ; fine drawings of lions and cubs. Mr, Lister, president of the New South Wales Art Society, contributes two exceptionally fine coastal scenes, and Mr. C. E. Worsley, R.8.A., has a picture of Fleet-street, in a London haze, also scenes painted in Spain and Italy. Messrs. Nugent Welch, Robert Jameson, S. Thompson (of Christchurch, now in Paris), Mrs. Hughes, and Mrs. Tripe are also represented. There are many fine etchings by prominent English artists. Intending visitors to this interesting exhibition are informed* that the pictures will only be on view until Saturday nest. Admission is free.
