FANCY DRESS AND POSTER BALL

There was a very large arid cheerful gathering at the Town Hall last night, when the Evans Bay Yacht and Motor Boat Club held a fancy dress and poster ball, which passed off with great spirit and success. The decorations ..were elaborate, and consisted of a huge crimson and black stencilled shade over the central electrolier, with green sliades, plain and figured, grouped around, with baskets' of • winter foliage grouped tastefully. Crimson,. blue, and yellow broad streamers were arranged from the central shade, and riaarow green ones from the others. The gallery was draped in bright shades, with the club flag in evidence iD the central position. Below the gallery were alcoves,' comiortably furnished,, while the stagf was screened in and decorated with greenery and pot plants." Under the main gallery was the supper, trellised off and set on tables decorated with the club colours and served in Continental • fashion; Both supper and music were excellent, and the floor was in. splendid order. At 9 o'clock the grand march was formed, and under the direction of the M.C.'s the dancers marched.and formed evolutions, while the judges had a most difficult problem in allotting the prizes. Mr. Joe Knowsley and Mrs. Rogers (of Auckland), judged, and .the a\yards went to Pivers's Parisian Kerfumefy, Miss R. M Trilford, for lady's poster; Mi. Lionel Easson, as J3entai Cream (Anti-Dyo), for gentleman's best poster; winter, Miss Bell Cordue, . be_t lady's fancy dress; and Mexican, Mr. H. D. Peat, best gentleman's. All of these were excellently carried- out —Miss Trilford wearing black, with Vandykes in bright yellow, and boxes of perfumery round her; and Miss Cordue being a striking figure, all white and fur, and carrying "a'pair of. skates. There was a great ■ "show" of posters, probably more than had ever appeared on onr .occasion in Wellington. Among them were Plume and Motor Spirits, British and Continental' Films, Cooper's Seeds and Parrot Food, Bon Accord, Q-Tol, United Order of Druids, Palm Olive, DentaJ Cream, Turnbull's Garden Seeds and Tools, Put and lake. Billiards Ltd., , Turnbull and Jones's Electrical Works, Universe, Record Tea,' Tuitex (pair), . Lux,. Lifebuoy, Alaska, Furs (pair), . Mobiloils, Kirkcaldie and Stains, Art Accord, Rinso, Extravaganza, Cody's Shirts, Pivers's Shaving Soap, Shell Benzine, PiversV Powder, Fleming and Co.,- and many others. There were many well-designed fancy dresses, representing various countries, Old English, Cavalier. Pierrots and Pierrettes, Red Riding Hood, and Eastern costumes. Pretty, plain dress frocks were also numerous, and it was difficult to decide whether the plain or fancy girls looked the more charming. Many were masked, and .these added to the fun of the evening. A "Returned . Soldier" was a. prominent figure in extremely ragged clothing and a wide grey beard! Another unusual figure was an apothecary of olden times. A pretty compliment was paid to the lady guests. As each arrived, she was presented with a charmingly, scented programme jrad a dainty little box of perfumery, these having been imported specially for the occasion, and causing great pleasure to the recipients. Tho chaperons for the evening were Mesdames A-. A. George, Ibbotson, Burberry, Paterson, and Hannah, and the M.C.'s were Messrs. G. M'llvride, Q. Harper, H. S. Hannah, and R. Wilson. Among those present were Mr. A. A. George (patron of the club), Mr. J. Paterson (president), Mr. A. J. Ibbotson (commodore); also Mr. & J. Keegan, J.P., of Sydney, a meriiber of the executive of the 'Royal Prince .Albert Club, of Sydney.
