A TRIP ABROAD

FOR DIRECTOR OF EDUCATION.

A proposal that the Director of Education should be sent abroad to investigate educational development in other countries was endorsed by the Council of Education to-day. .

Mr. J. R. Kirk (Gisborno) moved:— (1) "That the attention of the Minister of Education bo drawn to the recommendation of the council made, in June, 1919, and subsequently endorsed by the Hon. Minister, to the effect that 'if a New Zealander be appointed Director of Education lie should bo given twelve months' leave of absence in order to 'make a study of education as established abroad.' (2) 'That, us the education system of Now Zealand will be substantially modified by the introduction of the junior high school system, if is essential that at the earliest possible opportunity the Direcor should, ns recommended by the Post-Primary Conference, held in May la.st, proceed to make investigations with regard to modern developments in education in England, Scotland, and Wales." (3) "That this visit should be made in conjunction with the Imperial Education Conference, convened lor June next year by the Home Government specially in the interests of the Dominions, at which tho Homo Government desires that each Dominion should send ;i representative directly connected with education who shall take a principal share in introducing the va-rious topics for discussion."

Mr. R. M'Callura, M.P., said that Mr. J. A. Caughley, Director of Education, was a good man for his position arid was doing valuable work, but ho should have tho opportunity of going abroad, as was1* suggested in the motion. ' ' lne motion was carried.
