"THE MORAL BACKWASH"
TO THB EDITOR,
Sir, —Perhaps you will permit, me space in whichjito briefly reply to Mr,- Sievwrighf s /btter ■in your issue :of 25th instant, r^f above subject, and I will not further trouble you thereon,. as yI, have no desire to prolong a correspondence', which, it is evident,' will have no beneficial result. Mr. Sievwright' has evidently no desire to elucidate the true position as regards, the alleged. "Moral Backwash," but simply quibbles over the wording of his remarks, said to have been uttered' by Mr.' CuttenV Yet he heads his letters; i"The; Moral -Backwash," and quotes statistic;? with the view that, there is no moral backwash ' amongst our women, clearly demonstrating the only construction which can bo placed on Mr. Cutten's remarks..;, . . ;
In saying "I am reluctantly compelled to acquiesce in Mr. Cutten's remarks,". for Mr. Sievwright's edification I might have made my letter more explicit" by saying: "Prom the only construction which can be placed on the alleged; remarks of Mr. Cutten as stated by Mr.' Sievwright, if reliance can bo placed upon them, il am reluctantly compelled, etc., etc. ■ ■■ ' .
"Where is Mr. Dinnie's evidence to support his allegations?" asks Mr. Sievwright. I confess I am somewhat nonplussed. I really cannot comprehenbV'what he expects of me. Does he imagine I, carry it about in a nutshell ? Surely >he must know such evidence is unfit for publication'. There is one little question, however, bearing on this matter which I should be glad if Mr. Sievwright will enlighten me on, and that is: Why the necessity of enforcing stricter regulations of recent date on persons suffering from a contageous disease—venereal forsooth? Is it owing to what has been brought to light in statistical returns. If so, then Mr. Siovwright's calculations are un- | worthy of consideration. Does this suggest a backwash ?—I am, etc., '■ W. DINNIE. 27th May. ,' ' ;
