The Prime Minister, accompanied by his secretary, arrived overland late yesterday afternoon, after a nine'hours' wet trip, pwing to the weather and bad loads, he has abandoned the idea of going to Waikaremoana. Although _it was a wet night, a large crowd assembled in Coronation-square, and accorded Mr. ' Massey a great reception. He was welcomed by the Mayoi (Mr. J. Coikill) and Mi. Lysnar, M.P. The speeches stressed the great possibilities of the district, and referred to big developments pending. Ml. Massey and Mr. Lysnar gave a resume of the work of the session. Mr. Lysnar dwelt on the East Coast's needs. Mr. Massey dealt with the strenuous Parliamentary work in overtaking arrears of the war period and dealing with the changed peace conditions. He said he was impressed by the East Coast land and its possibilities. Mr. Massey made a splendid impression. His quick repartee put the crowd in good humour. Aftewards there was a "social," followed by a banquet, at which the whole district was represented, many coming from a long distance. Mr. Massey regretted that he had missed the Lake trip, but promised to return for the opening of the hydro-electric power. The Prime Minister .left by car for Gisborne thin morning. He will stop en route for an inspection of the WaiKokopu Harbour and the railway. The Gisborne nwd is bad.
