WASHINGTON, 2nd March. The Republican .members of the Ways and Means Committee of the House of Representatives unanimously reported on the Soldier Bonus Bill to-day, providing for- cash bonnes of less than fifty dollaTS and insurance cei'tificate compensation for those receiving more than fifty.
[There was tremendous political controversy over the Bill which was formulated to give ex-service men a monetary reward. The President and the Secretary for the Treasury were opposed to the bonus, bulj the Republican majority averred that it would be carried. President Harding ©nd'savoured to spike the gun b/ declaring that the bonus question > could be postponed until a more favourable time, unless Congress was willing to adopt a. general sales tax. The latter mad;e it doubtful whether the bonus proposad could be passed, as there was" strong "opposition to the sales -tax.]' .
