"ABREAST OF MODERN PROBLEMS"
STRIKING VICTORY FOR PROGRESS.
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.— COPTRIaHT.) ■ (AUSTRALIAN - NCW ZEALAND CABLE ASSOCIATION.) (Received February 8, 9 a.m.) ■ LONDON,'7th February. The French press hails the election of Cardinal Ratti enthusiastically. The Matin declares that the election is a, striking victory for Christianity and' scientific, social, and democratic progress. The Eclair says that Cardinal Ratti, having followed post-war international questions with the greatest interest, is abreast of all modern problems. The Figaro declares that the new Pope will devote all his efforts to bringing, about universal peace, a task in which the politicians have failed. Perhaps human calculations are incompetent to ensure peace, which may come, not from the chancelleries but from the human heart under Divine influence. The real universal crisis is not poverty and ruin, but weakness and discouragement in the soul.
