LAWN TENNIS

THE NEED OF GROUNDS

ASSOCIATION'S ANNUAL REPORT.

"The past season showed a distinct revival in tennis," states the annual report of the Wellington Provincial Lawn Tennis Association,: to be presented at the annual meeting on Wednesday next, "so much so that it was found impossible tp« accommodate the greatly increased number of players." The committee, with several prominent Wellington players, considered very fully the question of grounds. The City Council was approached as, to the Pirie-street reserve, and as to • the reserve near John-street. The former reserve was"abandohe,d on account of the expense of a retaining wall which the council required the association to 'erect. The latter reserve was declared unsmt 7 able by the committee and by the players who ' saw it. Other grounds in the city were inspected, and the committee was now of opinion that the .association must go out some distance for its grounds. Negotiations were made with regard to suitable land at Miramar, but unfortunately they fell through. The committee desired to thank , Messrs. Goldie, Swanston, Peacock, G. N. T. Goldie, and other* for their valuable assistance and interest in the grounds question- Mr. G. N- T/ .Goldie gave valuable assistance and time in surveying prospective grounds. Regarding inter-cluE competitions, the committee did its utmost to revive these matches last year, but was' absolutely uqable to obtain courts for the purpose. The committee approached the City Council for the use of the Day's Bay courts, or of a portion of a city reserve, and the several colleges in Wellington, but were met with disappointment in all cases -although a very sympathetic hearing was given by Wellington College and St. Patrick's College. Circumstances fully explained, prevented them coming to the association's assistance this, season. , ,':

It is now proposed that a special committee be appointed for the purpose of going into the question of grounds.

The ba|a,npe-s.heet showed an imprpvement compared with, last year. Tho jnpome arid expenditure account had a profit qf £2fi 16s 9d. whereas last year there was a loss of £W/3b lOd.
