MAGISTRATE'S COURT

Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided over to-day% sitting of the Magistrate's Court. Robert Wylie, a seaman, was charged with "fraudulently altering a report on character contained in his certificate of discharge from the steamer Whangaratta. It was stated that the man had boendis-" charged at Napier, and on coming to Wellington and presenting his ; discharge book, when in search of employment, it was easily seen by the officials that he had made an alteration in the report, putting in "V.G." Wylie pleaded that he had no money, and could get no work. A fine of £3, in default fourteen days' imprisonment, was'jmposed.

Against Frank Swift,, for whom Mr. P. H. Putnam appeared, a charge was made of selling adulterated cream of tartar. The lease arose out of a previous one, in which the merchants from whom, the defendant had stated that ho had procured the goods were prosecuted. The prosecution had not been successful. Mr. Putnam considered that it was not cricket in bringing on this case after the defendant had assisted ac a witness in the previous one. Swift did not know there was anything wrong with tho goods. The Magistrate, however, held the view thai the defendant was doing wrong, by selling clover cream as cream of tartar. He imposed a fine of £10, with costs and expenses 17s 6d. ■

A youth, for whom Mr. H. H. Cornish appeared, was fined £2 on a charge of theft of a pair of boots.

At a sitting of the Mount Cook Police Court, before 'Mr. G. B. Fownes, J.P., this morning, John Joseph Kelly, 'a third offender for drunkenness, was fined £3, in default seven days' imprisonment.
