THE KING'S CUP

INTERNATIONAL' CONTESTS.

Further discussion took place at last night's meeting of the executive of the Wellington R.S.A. regarding the King's Cup,' presented by His Majesty in 1919

to New Zealand, winners of the interAllied Rugby contests.

In reply to the seoretary'e inquiries on the subject, Mr. T. H. Jones, of Dannevirke, wrote as follows:—"The King's Cup, personally presented (after the French match at Twickenham on 19th April, 1919), by His Majesty the King to James Ryan, the New Zealand captain, is a challenge cup, and for that reason it is feared that fy cannot be presented for competition among secondary schools or senior Cadets. It is possible that a challenge may be received from some of the competing teams in the 1919 inter-services ehajmpkmehip. The idea was to hand it over to the war trophies section of the Dominion Museum! It is at present with the war exhibits now showing at Pahnerston North/

The president (Mr. W. Perry) reported that he had received a suggestion from Mr. J. W. A. Heenan that the Returned Soldiers' Association should mate representatitfhs, with a view to the revival of the international 'contests, for which the contest was initiated. As the Springboks were in New Zealand, possibly they would have ■ thought fit to ■ challenge the winners. The teams that competed in 1919 were ::—The Mother Country, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, and. Canada.

Mr. J. W. E. Hudson suggested that the General Officer Commanding the New Zealand Forces be communicated with, to move the Government to secure the King's sanction. ' .-•■

The question of having the cup competed for among Now Zealand Busby teams was discussed, but Lt\was felt by the meeting that 'the interprdvincial contests were already catered for by the Ranfurly Shield.

It was decided lo take the action suggested by the president. ' *■ '
