SOUTH WELLINGTON OADfiTS WIN ISLINGTON CUP. The Islington Oup, awarded for musketTy, wae last evening presented to th© 39th Company (South. Wellington) Senior Cadets by Colonel Melville, C.8., C.M.G., D.5.0., Officer Commanding Central District. • The ceremony took place at thejGarrison Hall, and the trophy was received by the company commander, Lieutenant W. J. E. Christopherson. The winning company also received £10 in prize money. In making the presentation, Colonel ■Melville congratulated the company on having registered the finest score since the inauguration of the competition. The present system of training, he said, was not directed^ so much at making- the youth of the Dominion good soldiers as making them good sportsmen and good citizens. .Every Cadet he had spoken to that evening had told him that he was engaged in some sport—football,, hockey, or cricket—and he w,as pleased that this was so:' It was to be hoped that the occasion'would not arise when those present would be called upon to defend their country as their fathers and brothers did, but, should that occa-i sion arise, lie felt that they would prove ready ami willing to do their share. He wished to see the characteristics of clean living, sportsmanship, and trustworthiness instilled into their training, for these were the characteristics of good citizenship. \ , :"' Conditions of the competition for the Islington Cup are as follow :—Senior Cadet company which : (a) Is not less than 60 in strength ; (b) has 80 per cent, of its total strength "exercised" in classification practices; (c) has obtained the best company average in the Dominion (musketry). • During the evening the following trophies were also presented :— Lady Godtey Cup, 31st Company., 1920-21.—Cadet R. C. Olivers (and medal). Lady Godley Cup, 39th Company, 1920-21.—Cadet J. C. Bolt (and meda.l). Medals were also presented to the winners of the rifle exercises, physical drill, and squad drill at the West Coast 'and Manawaiu Caledonian Society's sporte ylast Easter, as under : —' Physical Training.—39th Company.— C.S.M. Hearne, Cadets Kelly, Bentley, Ransome, L.-'Cpl. Rouse, Cadets Handcock, Orr, Athea, Bolt, Sergeants. .Cooper and Sanderson. Rifle Exercises.—27th Company.—Sgt. M'Ewsui, Cadets Pernandes, Middleton, Murphy, Guy, Jacobson, Montgomery, Hood, Auld, Baker, Brestin. Squad Drill.—3oth Company.—C.S.M. Osbome, Cadets Avery, • Mullinson, Booth, Williams, Chase, Gpls. Bennett, Carwell-Cooke, Morris, and Hutchinson.
