THE DAVIS CUP
AUSTRALIA BEATS DENMARK
(UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.—COPTRIQHT.)
VANCOUVER, 12th August,
In the sipgles in the Davis Cup tie between Australia and Denmark, the first match showed Peach to be the better court craftsman, his placements being superior to Tegner's. whose ground strokes were the poorest. Peach played a back-court game throughout the match. The first set started out a battle' for services, but the Australian finally broke through. Tegiier tired in the next set, and Peach had an easy time- ' The Dane staged a brief recovery in the last set, but Peach's back-court and placements work was too much for him.
Anderson was too fast for Engersley in thfi eecond match, and youth conquered. Anderson outstroked and outplaced the veteran Dane, whose footwork was extremely slow. Engersley's recovery in the fcwt set was remarkable. He won five games before Anderson recovered' and won. ■■■'■■
In the doubles Anderson and Todd (Australia) defeated Tegner and Hendricksen (Denmark), 6-3, 6-3, 6-2. The Danes were hardly the equals of tKe Australians. The losers also worked under the disadvantage of never having played on grass courts, therefore they constantly misjudged shots and were unable to accommodate themselves to the easy bouncing balls, and in attempting to learn the run of the turf they drove the balls into the nets and backstops.
The Australians' win promotes them into the final, as they will meet the winners of the India-Japan match at Newport on 25th, 26th, and 27th August. The Japanese are expected to win, in which case the Australians' task at Newport will not be an easy one.
