His Excellency the Governor-General Viscount Jellicoe returned from the South Island yesterday. Lady Jellicoe will. return to Wellington from Christehurcn on Wednesday, but the Hon. Lucy Jellicoe will continue to stay in Christchurch for a while; as the guest of "Mr. and Mrs. John Montgomery. His Excellency the Governor-General (Lord Jellicoe) has accepted an invitation to be the chief guest and speaker at a luncheon of the New Zealand Club to be held on 24th August in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall.

The Hon. C. J. Parr, Minister of Health and Education, is expected to return to Wellington from .the North on Wednesday.

Mr. GJ Mitchell, M.P., who has been on a visit to Otago, will return to Wellington to-morrow morning. •.

Mr. Leo D. Chateau, who has been on a business visit to Sydney, returned to Wellington yesterday.

Mr. J. J. Virgo will begin his eighth world tour in the interests of the V.M.C.A. in September, proceeding direct to Melbourne via Capetown.

A Press Association telegram from Feilding states that Mr. Henry. Dpuglas Pike, aged 72, is dead. He was an excommercial traveller for many houses, and was well-known all over' New Zealand.

Mr. S. K. Dickinson, formerly of Wellington,, has been appointed headmaster of the Hamilton and Western District School, Victoria—the oldest and one of the best-known provincial schools outside a 75-mile radius from Melbourne. '

The Eev. Father Carmine, parish priest of St; Peter and St. Paul Church, Lower Hutt, and chaplin of the Hutt Branch of the H.A.C.8.A.5., has recovered from his recent illness, and has resumed his labours in the parish.

Ex-Police Superintendent Cruickshank, late of Greymputh, who is now on a holiday visit to England, has been appointed Commissioner of Police at, Samoa, and wjll take up his duties there shortly after returning to New Zealand.

Mr. A. D. M'Leod, M.P. for Wairarapa, -who has been on' a health recruiting trip to Australia, returned yesterday greatly improved in health. During his stay on the other side he visited Queensland, Victoria, and. New South Wales. He was accompanied on the trip by Messrs. J. A. M'Dougall and ■W.H. Campbell, of the Wairarapa, who also returned by the Ulimaroa.

Mr. S. Oumming, postmaster at Masterton for the,past six yeai's, is retiring from the service at the end of September. Mr. Oumming joined the service in Otago early, in 1873, and ranks to-day as the oldest member in th e service. In a few months he would have completed fifty years. Mr Cumming is at present on his annual leave, but will return, to duty for a few weeks before retiring.

The death occurred this,morning from pneumonia, following an attack of malaritj, of Mr. Henry A. Smithson, M.A. (Oxbn.), a member of the teaching staff of Wellington College. Deceased, whose placid demeanour made him 1 a great favourite with all with whom he came! in joined the staff of Wellington College in 1908. He was educated at Haileybury Public School, England, where, he was a prefect,.and subsequently he graduated M.A. at Lincoln College, Oxford. While at Oxford, the late Mr. Smithson was stroke of the Lincoln College Eight, and winner of the Lincoln College Mile, a rowing event. Previous to coming to New Zealand, he was for some time a tea planter in Assam. At Wellington College he was for Inany years in charge of the Natural Science Society and of the school museum, and also took a keen interest in promoting the sport of rowing among the boys. Deceased leaves a widow.; and family of six young children. The funeral will lake place' to-morrow afternoon, leaving St.' Mark's Church, Dufferin-street, at 3 o'clock, and the staff and boys of Wellington College will be'present.
