THE WOOL MARKET
COMING SALES.
The wool market is to be tested in Wellington on Friday next with an offering of ' 10,700 bales. The allotments made by the Wool Committee and the 1 order of sale are as follow 7 , Bales. Farmers' 00-operative 1200 Wairarapa Farmers 675 Abraham and Williams 530 Loan and Mercantile , 920 Levin and Co. 3200 Murray, Roberts 1975 Dalgety 1450 Wright, Stephenson " 750 ' . 10,700 H is expected that prices—which will have "Ba\yra" reserve—will be equal to those realised at the last sales held hero on 4th July.,. It is not unlikely that a further sale with a limit as to quantities to be offered will be held in September next, but there i& nothing definitely fixed at present. It is essential, in tho interest of growers, that an effective clearance of al^ wool in the country should 'be made before the next ship comes in in November; bnt that -would, perhaps be too much to expect. A good clearance of the 10,700 to be offered would materially help in the desired direction, however. The London sales to be held at the end of this mouth have had quantities fixed. They are as follow : — Bales. New Zealand 30,000 Australian , 18,302 South African 646 South American/... 26J000 "Bawra" 60,000 135,000 It will be remenjbered that at the close of the London July sales, 28th ultimo, 85 per cent, of the "Bavrra" ■offerings sold. There was then good Continental demand for merinos and fine crossbreds. i.
In reply to .a. communication relating to a disease found in onions in some parts of Australia, the North Canterbury district of the Farmers' Union has received the following from the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, on behalf of the Minister of- Agriculture :—" It appears that the disease referred to is onion smut, which has not yet become established in New- Zealand, and 'which is regarded as troublesome to control. In view of the very considerable extent to which consumers in New Zealand have .to depend on importations, it is not considered advisable to take steps to stop importations, but, in order to prevent the importation of onions affected, it will bo added to the list of diseases in the Plant Importation Regulations, thus enabling inspectors at the ports to reject any consignment found to bo affected."
Messrs. C. W. Price and Co. will hold an Ruction sale of unredeemed pledges at their mart, No. 50, Lower Cuba-st., tomorrow »t 10.30 a.m.
