It is stated by Mr. N. E. Williams, secretary of the Nelson Education Board, that tho scheme instituted by the Minister affording tuition by correspondence for children who live beyond reach of school should be very beneficial to a number of back-blocks settlers in tho Nelson education district. In -that district already, he states, there are, in proportion, more- household schools —that is, schools with three to nine children on the roll—than in any other education district in New 'Zealand, but though liberal ■provision is 'made by the .Government towards the salaries of teacheri of such schools, there are settlers who are not in a position to arrange for tho establishment of household achools at their homes, so that the alternative now provided by the Education Department for correspond enct tuition should prove of jfrott value. ■
