A HORRIBLE CRIME
FATHER HESLIN'S MURDER
HIGHTOWER UNDER SUSPICION.
(Received August 13, 1.30 p.m.)
JNEW YORK, 12th August. Later details of the murder of Father Heslin show that the grave is at the foot of a cliff over a hundred feet high. There were six bullet holes in the body, and the sknll was crushed. There were eighty dollars in a pocket. The police' infer that Father Heslin was • asked to walk on the cliff and was shot down behind while peering over into a cave, and that the murderers riddled the body to make sure that life was extinct. The police are preparing to arrest Hightower on a charge of murder, and believe that at least one other person is involved. They suspect that Hightower feared that the police.were on the trail, and that, therefore, he voluntarily offered the information regarding the location of the body. A search of Hightower's room revealed a piece of bloody scrim, a rifle, and newspaper clippings relating to the disappearance. The police have also found an infernal machine, such as was mentioned in the first "demand for the ransom sent to the Archbishop. It consisted of a rifle and a contrivance that would fit on to a door in such a manner as to make it impossible to open the door without discharging the rifle. The first note regarding the ransom declared that Father Heslin be^ held in a room guarded by this contrivance.
