S.P.C.A.
The fortnightly _ meeting of the committee of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals was held this week, Mr. F. Meadowcroft presiding. There were al6o present ■' Mrs. Christie, Miss Richardson, Messrs. Watson, Cole, Forrest, Carvoseo, Kilgour, and the Rev. Robertson Orr. The inspector (Captain Henry) presented his report, which stated that he had looked into 21 cases of alleged cruelty, 20 of which dealt with horses and 1 with a cow. Throe horses had had to bo destroyed, and 7 were put off work for varying periods. Mr. Smith, tho newlyappointed organiser, reported that he' had been well received by the people he had waited on in tho interests of the society, and had received to date the sum of £21 12s. _ Letters were read from Kiwitea, Wainui, and Petono S.P.C.A. Junior Leagues, which reported that great progress was being mado in interesting the school children in the work done by the society A letter was also received from tho Royal S.P.C.A., London, stating that tho English Protection to Animals Act was being brought before the League of Nations at its next sitting, with. a view to international protection of animals. It was resolved to pay the expenses of two witnesses in recent cases before the Court on account of tho Court not having intcto any allowinoea,
