FAILURE TO ATTEND DRILL.

Failure to attend military parades resulted in the conviction of four Territorial by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning. His Worship remarked that the law required-, the young men to drill, and it would be cheaper for them to do so rather than have to be brought before the Court. In regard to one' offender named W. Hickling, a sapper in the engineers, -who did not put in an appearance, it waß stated'that he had been convicted seven times previously, had been fined suras totalling £32, and deprived of his civil rights for fiye years. "What can I do with him?" asked his Worship. "He is a hopeless• case, apparently." The Magistrate found a way out of the difficulty by imposing on Hicklinu a fino of £5, with the alternative of 28 days' military detention. W. G. Fitzgerald, who ltad been punished before, was fined £5, in default 28 days', detention, and was deprived of his civil rights.M. Pnlsford was fined £1 and costs', rind S, B.
