"G. 8.5." OFFENDS BULGARS
The Schonb'runn Castle Theatre, Vienna, where- Bernard Shaw's "Heroes" was given recently for the first time, was the scene of a noisy demonstration by Bulgarian studeats, seeing in .the comedy an offence to their nation. The manager, being informed of tllo intentions o£ the Bulgarians, addressed the audience before the play began, saying that neither the- author nor tho theatre intended to offend Bulgarians. and ■ asking the audience to think tho scene Svas Shakespeare's Illyria. Towards the end of the first act, however, a Bulgarian shouted: "Fie! Disgrace.' We cannot stand this soandal," and begar to address the public. Although tho police removed a number of poisons there wore similar noisy interruptions in tlif/ second act, and even some scuffles between Bulgarian? and Viennese. - » The play was subsequently taken off, os the Bulgarians threatened to continue their, demonstrations at future performances.
