M.P. OR MAYOR

10 THE. EDITOR. Sir, —J sincerely trust" you can give me space, to .make a. few remarks with regard to the Mayor's attitude in not talcing the chair at publio meeting of citizens. I don't know anything yet ■about tha . National Progressive and Moderate Labour Part;/;' but I want to know, as a citizen of 36 years' experience, having been born and bred here. I think it is quite time the ratepayers of the Empire City took' a stand against our Mayor 'being also ■ a member or Parliament, and thus letting party politics prevent him taking the chair at a public mooting in tho Town Hall; this, I contend, is one of his official duties. During the 'scission I defy any man, however energetic he might be, to perform the duties of Mayor of this city, and M.P. for Suburbs, and carry on his private business, and give all three duo consideration. Mr. Editor, what harm could it ■ possibly do his W,orship to take the cRSir? Tho . Mayor as leading citizen, represents a population of 1 justy under 100,000 citizens, and as M.P. for Suburbs represents about 20,000 electors. I£ that is so, I trust,, as Mayor, he will reconsider his decision, and not let party politics enter his offioial position as Mayor of this city.— I am, etc., WHO'S WKONG? 10th August. TO THB EDITOR. Sir, —As a supporter of Mr. Wright's' at the last election for the Mayoralty— but as ono differing from him in politics— I'was somewhat surprised to read in your paper to-night of his refusal to preside over a public meeting of the new party on tho 24th. Of course, tha Mayor may have some good reason for tho refusal, but I think the public should be informed of it. It is hard to understand the explanation already given, as I hardly think any elector, is so ignorant ac to imagine that tho city's Mayor'must bo in accord' with every movement over which he presides.—l am, etc., JUSTICE. 9th August.
