COMING EXHIBITION

PURELY A TARIFF DISPLAY

INDUSTRIAL ASSOCIATIONS

DECISION.

Aa the result of a decision reached by the committee of the Industrial Association last night, there is to be no combined exhibiton held in Wellington before the forthcoming tariff exhibition. The committee favours the holding of an exhibition in .conjunction with the Trades and Labour Council at some future date. The decision was^arrived at on the following resolution moved by Mr. W. J. Hardie Shaw:— Q . / .;.•

"That in view of the unavoidable uncertainty, as to declaring 'the: date on which the proposed New Zealand Industrial Exhibition should he held in Wellington, the delay referred to having been in consequence of the absence of the Premier, the Et. Hon. Mr. Massey, from" the Dominion, it (would be undesirable to hold any exhibition by which a surplus could be reasonably anticipated* in the short space of time available. For this reason, this association is of opinion that what has been' referred to as the combined exhibition, viz., the proposed exhibition by the Wellington Provincial Industrial Association and the Wellington Trades and Labour Council, should be held at a later date." Mr. E. Bull seconded the motion. He said that he felt that the, holding of a combined exhibition would clash with the proposed tariff exhibiton. The tariff exhibition was to be free, but for. a combined exhibition he thought that it would-be necessary to make a charge. The association, should devot» all its energies to making the tariff exhibition a success. It would not be a sound idea to hold a combined exhibition before the tariff exhibition.. ' < < ■

' Mr. Shaw endorsed the remarks of Mr. Bull. He favoured the idea of holding a combined exhibition, but thought | that the time was not yet ripe for doing bo. It) was essential to hold the tariff exhibition before the meetjng of Parlia--ment in order that the association might obtain full weight for its views. ,The secretary (Mr. H. F. Allen) explained that there was a good deal of confusion regarding the tariff exhibition, and for that i reason he welcomed the motion. He did not think. that even the Trades and Labour Council would care to have its exhibition held after the tariff exhibition, because people who had • been admitted free to the one would be' diffident about paying to attend the other. .Mr. Bull said he trusted that the association would endeavour to hold a combined exhibition at a later date. The motion was carried. Committees to arrange details in connection with the exhibition were set up as under:— " ■ ' Executive: The president, two vice presidents, and chairmen of other committees. ■ >r ' ' Finance: Messrs. H. Mainland, E. Bull, and W. J. Hardie Shaw > Space and Building': Messrs."' Main land, W. M'Lay, D. H. Taylor. Printing and Advertising: Messrs. L. 'Ri Partridge, F. W. Vickerman, and F. Vosseler. The President (Mr. C. J. Ward) said that he disJ not intend at that stage to refer to statements that had been made in various parts of the'country in refer ence. to ithe association's views on tariff matters. - "We are not asking for' the whole of the sun to'shirie oh' us, like' the 1 farmers have been asking in the past week or two," he said. "We are only asking for a little bit of the. .sun:"

Mr. Ward said that the-Minister had informed him that he thought the j date of the exhibition would fit in all right with the presentation of the Tariff Bill to the House. The Minister was pleased, with the idea of the exhibition as tending to show what' New Zealand could do in the way of manufacture. Mr. Ward added that the indications ■pointed to every available foot of space being occupied. He paid a tribute to the officers of the Board of Trade and the Department of Industries and Commerce for the help they had rendered in connection with the matter. ■■} .';■.
