STILL MORE TEACHERS WANTED

TO SECURE ALL-BOUND EFFI -■ CIENCY.

The report for,the year 1920 made by the Chairman of the Wellington Education Board, Mr. T. 'Forsyth, to the Minister states that there -were in-th© employ of the board during the past yea.r 219 male and 580 female teachers, and, including probationers, the staff numbers had increased by 38 (males 8, females'3o). With regard to the entrance of young people into the service ns pupil teachers or probationers, the improved rates of payment in force since April, 1920, came too late to increase the number of entrants. The very keen competition of Government Departments and commercial houses had always operated against the education service in Wellington, a,nd a shortage of supply was again experienced, though on ■ the whole the standard of ■ those 1 entering the service was slightly higher. The increases in salary offered to country teachere had certainly induced a number to' undertake country work," hut still not nearly enough to ensure all-round efficiency. Difficulty was etiH experienced in filling the remote schools and the lowar grade oounfay assistant.ships. It was worthy of note that in those districts where a teacher is assured of a friendly welcome and a comfortable home much less diffieultyvia experienced in filling vacancies than in those districts where the living conditions are unsatisfactory. The total number of students at <he Wellington Training College during the year was 186, of whom 44 were men and 142 women, and 84 were first year and 102 second year students.
