POSITION IN WALES

SLUMP IN VALUES FEARED

PITS MAY HAVE TO BE CLOSED.

(Received August 9, 9 a.m.)

LONDON, Bth August.

The Daily Chronicle's correspondent at Cardiff states that the coal output has outstripped the demand. v A heavy slump in values is feared, also the closure of many pits. Last week steam coal fell to £2 per ton, and a fall to 30s is impending.

Fifty thousand men are already idle as the result of _the coal strike, and it is feared that many thousands will join them, but it is hoped that the reduction in price will enable the Welsh exporters to recover the South American market.
